There are more than 75 million people in the world who need a wheelchair for their posture and mobility. According to the WHO, only 15% of this population has access to the appropriate wheelchair. The need is important and urgent as many people are isolated, and excluded from participation due to the lack of appropriate provision. In 2018, the WHO developed the Guidelines for the Provision of Wheelchairs where it was evidenced that the wheelchair is accessed within a Steps Service. It is in this context that the WHO decided to address this situation by developing educational programs since to access the appropriate chair an adequate Provision Service is needed, it is not only the device itself, but how it is going to be evaluated, selected, prepared, adjusted, trained and followed up with maintenance. The WHO has 2 WSTP programs that I call Basic (B) and Intermediate (I) and the difference is in the population that wants to provide wheelchairs
The purpose is to train stakeholders with different roles in the Porvision Chair Service, so that they can then provide it and have an impact on improving access to users.
After a revision of the 2008 Guidelines, in 2023 the WHO launched the new Global Guidelines on Wheelchair Provision. Proposing the type of service that every user must have to access their wheelchair
